Curriculum sketch in the Style of Keri Smith

Updated: Oct 22, 2018

Things not included in my sketch:

Curriculum One: Ideas About Nature

Learning goals: Students will create an art book that address their research into cultural ideas about nature.

During a series of workshops, the class will work on skills that they may apply to their final art project. They will also conduct research on cultural ideas about nature and preservation of lands and resources.

Workshop 1 Shading eggs

Workshop goals: Students will create a drawing with convincing shading.

Eggs will be placed on the desk with directional light shining on the eggs. Students will then draw the eggs using black and white charcoal. We will hang the eggs and talk about different styles of art and personal styles. We will discuss reflected light and curvature.

Next step: Students will bring an object from outdoors into the classroom to shade.

Workshop 2 Painted Paper/ Color mixing

Workshop goals: Students will make a painting using gestural movement.

Students will be given large sheets of paper and a pallet of paint. They will fill the whole paper using gestural movements and exploring the range of color achieved by the paint mixing on the paper. We will do multiple paintings. We will examine the brushstrokes and the use our mixed colors as a replacement for a color wheel activity.

Next step: Students will make a new rule for four paintings (such as smooth motions, cirucular motions, choppy motions) to examine how the change in motion affects their painting.

Workshop 3 Shape finding

Workshop Goal: Using the painted paper create a replica of a famous art piece.

Students will be given a famous art piece. Finding similar colors among the paint paper, students will identify major shapes in the famous artwork. They will then cut or rip the paper into those shapes and glue them to mat board. Thus making a painted paper copy of the master work.

Next step: Alter the collage by adding in an element of drawing.

Workshop 4 color matching

Workshop goal: Students will learn how intentionally mix colors to get the desired hue.

Once again replicating the work of a renowned artist, students will mix acrylic paints to color match the work. Pulling on their skills of shape finding and gesture painting, the students will create a properly colored painting.

Next step: Each student will make a painting matching the color of each item of clothing they are wearing that day.

Workshop 5 Oil Pastels

Workshop goal: Students will make an oil pastel artwork.

Copying an artwork done by a master painter students will recreate the master’s work using oil pastels.

Next step: Make an oil pastel work of a chosen scene.

Workshop 6 Panel Making

Workshop goal: The student will make their own panels.

Using rabbit skin glue mixed with calcium carbonate, students will make their own gesso. They will apply one layer with out calcium cabonate to the front and back of the panel. Then mixing in the calcium carbonate, the students will add eight more layers. When the layers are dry they will be sanded smooth and have a base color added to the board.

Next step: Each student will find something to work as a panel. They will bring it in an gesso it. This teaches the students that they do not need fansy things to be an artist.

Workshop 7 Plien-air painting

Workshop goal: Students will make a Plien-air painting.

We will have class outside. We will paint from observation using all the previous skills from this unitl. Students will be given a variety of paints to test out. We will discuss atmospheric perspective, color change with distance, and shadows.

Next step: Students will find a way to subvert Plien-air painting.

Workshop 8 Stick Ink Drawing.

Worshop Goal: Students will create an ink drawing.

Students will gather sticks from outside to use as ink tools. Each student will be given a chinese ink drawing to replicate. Using their sticks and brushed provided on their desks they will explore making marks in this new medium.

Next step: Students will research traditional ink drawings and the depiction of nature there in. Then applying those ideas so they are relevant today, students will make their own ink drawing.

Research-We will watch clips from old and new King Kong, Gorillas in the Mist, and Grizzly Man and discuss our ideas about nature. We will look at environmental artists such as Chris Jordan, Agnes Denes, Nils-Udo, Andy Goldsworthy, Red Earth Environmental Art Group. We will research and discuss conservation issues in our state.

Final project: Students will create an artbook addressing cultural views on nature.
