Focusing on the elements and principles of art is an ineffectual way to teach art. Much of the original meaning of the pieces is lost by considering the art simply as elements and principles. Olivia Gude’s article proposes a better learning scaffold called the spiral workshop. This method incorporates curriculum based on meaningful themes to students, diverse ways and tools for art making, and art as an investigation. If there must be elements in teaching art they should include: appropriation, recontextualization, hybridity, juxtapositioning, layering, text&image, gazing, and representing the artist.
